Case Study 6:

 Complex Re-treatment

History:
This patient was referred as her dentist picked up problems with two of her teeth which had been previously root filled. Although the patient was not experiencing any pain she was aware of re-current swellings associated with the two teeth.

Treatment:
The lower tooth was successfully root filled following removal of the previous poorly fitting crown. Upon completion of the endodontic treatment, the definitive core was placed and a temporary crown fabricated. It was agreed that the patients dentist would place the final crown following confirmation of healing.

Endodontic treatment of the upper tooth confirmed the presence of a three rooted premolar which is likely to have complicated the initial treatment. The initial treatment was carried out through the crown some five years previously and the crown was well fitting with good aesthetics. Consequently a decision was made to complete treatment through the crown once again. With the aid of a dental operating microscope all three roots were successfully root filled and the final core placed.

Result:
At the most recent review appointment there was excellent evidence of healing of both teeth. The patient has since had her temporary crown on the lower tooth replaced with a permanent crown by her dentist
