Case Study 5 :
Decay beneath a bridge
History:
This patient was referred to us by her new dentist, owing to recurrent pain and swelling despite an attempt by her previous dentist to root fill her problem tooth through the bridge. It was explained that the bridge out to be sectioned and removed as decay was noted around the problem tooth.
Our Treatment:
Following careful removal of the bridge in addition to the associated decay; a restorability assessment revealed the new crown would require post reinforcement. It was explained to the patient that the tooth ought to be restored as a single unit crown to increase its longevity.
Upon completion of the endodontic treatment a post space was left and prepared in the distal root canal to aid restoration of the tooth.
Result:
The recurrent swelling resolved prior to completion of the endodontic treatment. The post-operative radiograph revealed the mesio-buccal canal had a lateral exit which helped to explain the appearance of the apico-lateral radiolucency.
